Novak Djokovic: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal GOAT claim made over Serb at US Open
NOVAK DJOKOVIC can put himself back into contention as the greatest player of all time with victory at the US Open.
Novak Djokovic trains with giant racket ahead of US Open
That’s the view of former Flushing Meadows finalist, and current Amazon Prime pundit, Greg Rusedski.
Many see Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as the greatest to ever step foot onto the tennis court, alongside the likes of Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras.
Federer leads the Grand Slam tally having won 20 Majors during his career with long-term rival Nadal just three behind him.
A win in New York for Djokovic would put him tied third with Pete Sampras on 14.
Djokovic is Rusedski’s favourite for the title and the pundit admits the 31-year-old could become the GOAT.
“He is the favourite here in my opinion because the court surface is a little bit slower and by beating Federer in the Cincinnati final he is full of confidence,” Rusedski said.
“Djokovic doesn’t want to be in the shadows of Nadal and Federer, and from a public point of view he is at the moment.
“But he’s won all the ATP Masters titles and held all four Majors at the same time, so he’s etching up there.
“With the way he’s playing, if he wins the US Open, he gets back into the conversation for the greatest of all time.
“He would have tied Sampras with 14 Grand Slams and he’s six years younger than Roger Federer.”
By winning the recent Cincinnati Masters, Djokovic became the first player ever to win all nine ATP Masters titles.
And it’s not just Rusedski who has Djokovic down as favourite with boxing legend Mike Tyson admitting a soft spot for the Serb.
“I’d like to play like Novak Djokovic,” Tyson told SecondsOut.
“My favourite player of all time is Serena Williams, she’s the best of all time.”
Djokovic is currently in US Open second round action against Tennys Sandgren.
