The former All Black has a year left on his three-year deal at Welford Road but was told he would be replaced by another former Leicester coach, Matt O’Connor, a day after Tigers had won the Anglo-Welsh Cup on Sunday.
He could have walked away there and then but committed to one more game convinced he has turned the team around after Richard Cockerill’s sacking as director of rugby in January.

Mauger said: “I have been committed to this group the whole way through. I’m clearly disappointed and devastated at the outcome, but the club has made the decision.”
Leicester have won three out of their last four in the Premiership and Sunday’s Anglo-Welsh win was their first trophy since 2013.
