The hosts finished an impressive campaign with a bonus-point victory at Murrayfield to give coach Cotter the perfect send-off to his three-year reign.
Try-scorers Finn Russell, Matt Scott, Tim Visser and Tommy Seymour ensured Scotland bounced back from their thrashing by England last time out.
New Zealander Cotter received a huge ovation from the crowd as he took to the pitch after the game.
With a note of emotion in his voice, he said: “I’d like to thank the players and everybody for the last three years. It’s been fantastic.”
Scotland captain John Barclay paid tribute, saying: “He’s built a fantastic culture in the team. He’s a great man.
“We really wanted to give the coaching team a good send-off.”

Knowing a bonus point was required to keep alive hopes of finishing as runners-up, Scotland turned up the heat as they went in search of a fourth try.
And they got it with eight minutes to spare as Seymour cantered in. Cotter will be replaced by Glasgow’s Gregor Townsend in summer.
