Snooker: Mark Williams desperate for another title
MARK WILLIAMS insisted last night that he is not ready to be pensioned off just yet – and is desperate for another major title.
The two-time Betfair Masters winner, who turns 38 in a month, is the oldest player left in the draw at Alexandra Palace.
But world No7 Williams won the last five frames to pull off a 6-4 comeback win over fellow Welshman Matthew Stevens – who missed a simple brown to go 5-1 up.
I’ve never thought about my age but I am 38 in a month and there are not many players who win titles at that age.
And the left-hander revealed veteran Steve Davis had offered to coach him for free after struggling badly at times against close pal Stevens.
Williams said: “I feel a bit old after that. I’ve never thought about my age but I am 38 in a month and there are not many players who win titles at that age.”
World No15 Stevens, 35, the 2000 Masters winner, said: “I miss one ball and the match turns on its head. It is a game I want to forget, quickly.”
