Peter Wright bursts into tears and gives emotional interview after Michael van Gerwen win

Peter Wright failed to hold back his emotions as the darts star burst into tears following his win over Michael van Gerwen at the German Darts Championship.

Wright looked back to his best as he waltzed his way to the quarter-finals, having beaten the likes of Niko Springer, Gian van Veen and Stephen Bunting.

However, his chances of progression into the last four looked slim, given he was coming up against three-time world champion Van Gerwen.

Despite the odds being stacked against him, Wright came out on top, edging an enthralling battle in the German city of Hildesheim 6-4.

Snakebite averaged 108 during the 10-leg tie, completed over 50 per cent of his checkouts and registered a tidy six 180s.

Speaking after the win, Wright told PDC Darts: “Obviously you have to play well against Michael, obviously he’s had his operation, but he’s still been playing good darts."

But the Scot struggled to keep his emotions in check during the post-match interview, as a raucous crowd in Germany sang Wright’s name in unison.

A visibly emotional Wright was unable to continue with his interview, but he did muster up enough energy to murmur: “I’m on the way back.”

His emotions were understandable, given Wright has struggled for form this season and in most cases been written off as one of the top players on the darts circuit.

Wright finished bottom of the pile at this year’s Premier League, notching up just four points throughout the competition - eight less than second-bottom Gerwyn Price.

But the two-time world champion proved class is permanent by defeating MVG to set up a semi-final clash with Dave Chisnall.

And it turned out Wright’s prophecy was correct, with the 54-year-old once again on the winning side, this time by virtue of a 7-5 triumph.

The semi-final victory would see him drawn against teenage sensation Luke Littler, who had returned to the beat following a short hiatus.

But even Littler would be no match for a rejuvenated Wright, who kept his cool and won the German Darts Championship final 8-5.

It looked as if Littler would run away with the match, having raced to a 5-2 lead.

But a remarkable fightback from Wright so him level up and with the scores tied at 5-5, he put his foot on the accelerator, winning the next three legs to take the crown.
