Oscar Pistorius now - New life of Paralympian nine months after release from prison

Oscar Pistorius is living a different life after his release from prison earlier this year, where he served almost nine years for killing Reeva Steenkamp.

Once a Paralympic champion, Oscar Pistorius is now adapting to life outside prison, nearly nine months after being released for killing his girlfriend. Eleven years on from fatally shooting his then-partner Reeva Steenkamp through a bathroom door, claiming he mistook her for an intruder, the South African was granted parole from the prison where he was serving his sentence.

The former sprinter, who made history as the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics at London 2012, is now leading a drastically different life. He was granted parole as per South African law, which allows all convicts to be considered once they have served half their sentence. However, he remains under stringent and invasive parole conditions until its expiration in 2029.

While Pistorius may no longer be incarcerated, his freedom is far from what most would consider normal. He is restricted to his home during certain hours, prohibited from consuming alcohol, and barred from speaking to the media. He is also reportedly undergoing therapy sessions to address issues related to gender-based violence and anger.

During his time in Atteridgeville Correctional Centre - a prison in Pretoria - Pistorius drove a tractor around the premises and worked in the library, according to reports by South African journalist Karyn Maughan. The former sporting icon reportedly turned to menial tasks like cleaning other prisoners' cells based on the disclosed documents.

After his initial prison entry in October 2014, Pistorius briefly tasted freedom under house arrest between 2015 and 2016 before being slapped with an extended sentence following a change in his conviction. It has also come to light that Pistorius appears to be residing at his uncle's mansion. It's also been suggested that Pistorius served as an assistant at NG Kerk Waterkloof, a Dutch Reformed Church allegedly frequented by his uncle.

Alleged accounts from a supposed churchgoer describe Pistorius as having grown long hair and a beard while apparently packing on the pounds. It is also rumoured he was seen performing janitorial tasks at the church, sweeping floors and engaging in light maintenance duties.

There were rumours of Pistorius reaching out to the International Paralympic Committee, which is said to have promptly shut down any form of contact. Pistorius' legal representative, the church, and the committee collectively dismissed these allegations.

The International Paralympic Committee separately clarified their stance, stating: "There have certainly been no discussions that we are aware of regarding a collaboration or the potential for work." Echoing this sentiment, the Dutch Reformed Church put the record straight by confirming that Pistorius "is not employed by the church in any capacity and there are no parole conditions obliging him to work at the church".

Pistorius is not required to wear an electronic tag but he is rarely out of the law's sight. He is frequently visited by parole officers who conduct random checks throughout the day, including drug and alcohol tests. The constant monitoring will be his life until 2029 when his sentence will end. Pistorius was initially handed a five-year prison term after being found guilty of culpable homicide in 2014.

However, he was re-convicted of murder in 2015 after an appeal court overturned the culpable homicide - or manslaughter - charge. Pistorius had his legs amputated before he turned one due to a congenital condition that left him without fibulas in his legs. He depended on prosthetics for everyday life as well as competition.
