Opposites may attract, but British athletics legend Steve Cram found a kindred spirit in his partner Allison Curbishley. And the duo make for a rare breed of power couple considering they each competed at the Olympic Games in their day.

Olympic silver medallist Cram, 63, was a formidable competitor in three Summer Games and was a constant force in middle-distance running. However, a series of unfortunate injuries in the 1980s dashed his hopes of clinching gold.

After hanging up his spikes in 1994, the former 1,500-metre specialist transitioned into coaching and broadcasting, becoming the voice of athletics for the BBC at numerous editions of the Games. His girlfriend, Curbishley - no relation to football manager Alan - has followed a remarkably similar career trajectory after her own notable achievements on the track.

Curbishley, 48, shone in shorter - events and was a rising star in the 400m. She made her Olympic debut at the 1996 Atlanta Games, competing in the 4x400m relay, and returned four years later in Sydney for both the relay and individual 400m events.

She secured 400m gold at the Under-23 European Championships in 1997, where she also helped the team win the 4x400m relay. However, The Mirror detailed how she was unable to replicate this success at the senior level.

She represented Great Britain at the European Championships in 1998, helping her country secure a bronze in the relay. In the same year, the Durham native donned Scotland's colours and clinched silver in the individual 400m at the Commonwealth Games.

Despite showing early promise in netball and hockey, Curbishley chose athletics as her main focus. However, she decided to hang up her spikes in 2003, aged 27, due to a persistent knee injury that required multiple surgeries.

Cram was previously wedded to ex-wife Karen and has two children, Josie and Marcus, from his previous relationship. The couple parted ways in 2006.
