A major crash has led to a red flag at Indianapolis 500, as both Felix Rosenqvist and Kyle Kirkwood slammed into the wall following a nasty collision
A major crash has occurred at IndyCar 500 as both Felix Rosenqvist and Kyle Kirkwood collided with 16 laps to go in Sunday's race. The drivers are reportedly in a stable condition, after slamming into the wall following a coming together.
The 107th edition of Indy 500 has been won by Josef Newgarden after a dramatic finish, although the race was marred by a major crash as fans ducked for cover on Sunday.
With 16 laps to go Rosenqvist lost control of his car and hit the wall initially, and with his wheel now compromised his vehicle began to spin and head for the wall. During the spin, Rosenqvist clipped Kirkwood's car which then flipped upside down after hitting the wall.
Kirkwood's wheel then came off and due to the velocity of the impact it flew into the air and towards the spectators. The wheel managed to clear the safety fence, but there have been no reports of any fan injury following the incident.

Television cameras caught all angles of the crash, and it appeared as though the wheel not only missed the safety fence, but also the grandstands as well. According to the US commentary team, the wheel struck a white car, in the car park.
Despite the heavy impact, Rosenqvist and Kirkwood came out of the crash unscathed and left the scene on foot. The race was eventually restarted with 10 laps to go, but was once again halted shortly after.
This time Marcus Ericsson and Pato O'Ward were involved in a crash, causing yet another red flag. O'Ward had to be retired on the spot, but Ericsson was able to continue.
