NFL news: Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers opens up on knee injury
GREEN BAY PACKERS star Aaron Rodgers is hoping to play against Minnesota Vikings in NFL Week 2 despite suffering a knee injury against Chicago Bears.
Rodgers was forced to leave the field during the second quarter against the Bears but returned to lead Green Bay to an opening week 24-23 win.
Packers were 17-0 down at halftime but Rodgers starred in the final quarter.
The quarterback threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns including a 75-yard touchdown pass to Randall Cobb with less than two minutes left.
There are doubts over whether Rodgers, who missed a large chunk of last season with a shoulder injury, will be fit to start against the Vikings.
But the 34-year-old is hoping to be ready as Packers aim to continue their fine start.
"I'm sure there are a lot of experts out there who are forecasting things but we're taking it one day at a time," Rodgers said.
"I plan on playing.
"It was going to have to take something really catastrophic injury-wise to keep me off the field in the second half (against Bears).”
Packers coach Mike McCarthy is also keen not to rush any decision on Rodgers.
“We’re still collecting all the information (about) his specific situation,” McCarthy said.
“And I know Aaron wants to play and is always driven to play, but that’s all I have for right now.
“Any time a player’s injury, particularly when they bring him inside, based on the injury there’s a protocol of what they go through to see if the doctor will clear them to go back out.
“That process went on throughout the second quarter (and) into halftime.
“Frankly, at halftime we were preparing as an offensive staff to play with DeShone (Kizer) and then shortly before we got out to the field, as we were walking to the tunnel, I had a chance to talk to Aaron and Dr McKenzie and he was cleared to go.”
Two-time Super Bowl winner Deion Sanders wouldn't play Rodgers though.
