Terry Bradshaw once warned Tom Brady that his switch to sports punditry would be daunting, but the NFL icon has taken it in his stride. The experienced FOX host told reporters in 2023 that the New England Patriots legend would encounter a lot of scrutiny due to his immense fame.

Brady signed a lucrative deal with FOX in May 2022, becoming their main colour commentator with an agreement worth a hefty £306.6 million ($375m) over 10 years. According to NY Post reports, Bradshaw pointed out the challenge Brady faced as he transitioned into broadcasting because he is such a celebrated NFL icon.

He said: "It won't be easy. The problem with Tom is the whole world is gonna watch. Everyone wants to see how he does. And if he doesn't meet the expectations of you guys, you're gonna say it. So I don't think criticism is something that has come his way in his 20-plus years in the NFL. I know a lot of these superstar quarterbacks get criticized to a degree. They don't take kindly to it."

Despite initial hiccups at the beginning of the 2024 NFL season that proved Bradshaw's predictions correct, Brady has visibly matured as a pundit week after week and dealt well with the hurdles of live commentary. Brady has also been navigating a minefield of restrictions due to his part-ownership status of the Las Vegas Raiders.

The legendary quarterback is barred from attending in-person or online broadcast production meetings with the team, accessing team facilities, or interacting with coaches, players, and practice sessions. In accordance with the NFL constitution's bylaws, he is also prohibited from publicly criticising game officials and other teams.

Bradshaw isn't the only one casting a sceptical eye over Brady's dedication to his broadcasting career. Brady's former team-mate Vince Wilfork also shared his opinion on Brady's punditry during a WFAN radio interview.

Wilfork said: "I don't know. I mean, he's very knowledgeable of the game. Like that's what it is. But I would rather him be my quarterback than on TV doing what he's doing now. I love him for [being] my quarterback."

Bradshaw also told the Today Show that Brady had sought his advice on commentary before ever stepping into the booth. The 76-year-old said: "Tom did say, 'hey look, if you could give me some any advice at all, I really value what you have to say', and I really appreciated that."

Brady is gearing up for his most significant broadcasting challenge yet, with Super Bowl LIX on the horizon. The task has been somewhat simplified for the retired NFL icon, thanks to the Raiders' absence from the playoffs due to a disappointing regular season performance.
