Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes issues warning to NFL rivals as MVP reveals target
PATRICK MAHOMES isn’t resting on his laurels after grabbing the NFL MVP award last year and is already on his way to shedding the pounds to get himself ready for this season.
Mahomes has come a long way after being drafted as the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
After spending his rookie year learning his craft and being mentored by veteran Alex Smith, Mahomes went on to ignite the league in his first season as a starting quarterback.
The 23-year-old threw more than 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns - a feat only one other person has done in the history of the league - and he is aiming to shedding body fat so he can perform even better this year.
"For me, offseason-training wise, it's all about trying to define [my body], trying to make sure I'm in the best shape possible, nutritionally and physically and mentally," Mahomes said.
I've gotten more muscular and [have] less baby fat, I guess you would say
"So the big thing for me this offseason going in was, I wanted to gain muscle but at the same time, cut weight.
“Kind of a mixture of both."
In 2018 Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards off 383 completions and finished the regular season with a 113.8 quarterback rating.
He also racked up 300 or more yards in eight straight games - tying an NFL single-season record in the process.
In the post-season the Chiefs made it to the AFC Conference Championship Game where they lost 37-31 to the New England Patriots in overtime.
And to aid his ambitions of making it all the way to the Super Bowl, Mahomes is hoping that getting his body fat under 10 per-cent will put him in the perfect physical condition.
"The lowest I was last year after training camp was 12 per-cent, and that's pretty good," Mahomes said.
"But now my goal is to be in the single digits, so I'm gonna try to get as low as I possibly can while still being healthy and still having the body to be able to take a full season."
The Chiefs’ training camp opens on July 26 and Mahomes is working to ensure he remains among the elite quarterbacks in the league.
"I've gotten more muscular and [have] less baby fat, I guess you would say," Mahomes said.
"So that's been the big thing for me, sculpting my body in the best way possible so I can go through the season and feel just as fresh at the end as I did at the beginning."
