Patrick Mahomes Super Bowl claim made by NFL legend after Chiefs beat Colts
PATRICK MAHOMES can lead the Kansas City Chiefs to the Super Bowl after seeing off the Indianapolis Colts 31-13 in the playoffs.
That is the verdict of former NFL defensive back Rod Woodson.
The Chiefs advanced through to the AFC Championship game for the first time since 1993, before Mahomes was born.
The 23-year-old scored a rushing touchdown and threw for 278 yards in the win, which the Chiefs had pretty much secured by half-time.
One of the more impressive parts of the tie was the running game by the Chiefs.
Damien Williams rushed for 129 yards with one touchdown, while Tyreek Hill ran 36 yards.
And Woodson explained that this showed the Chiefs have what it takes to go to the next stage.
He explained that the all-round game shown by the team would have sent out a message to the rest of the league that they won’t rely on Mahomes’ passing.
“At times you need a stretch of games,” he said.
“You go back to Baltimore when they won their last Super Bowl, their defence got healthy at the same time.
“They had Joe Flacco having some good games, they won the Super Bowl.
“We know the offence can score.
“And now we know they can run the football, that’s why they gave Damien Williams the contract extension.
“But if the defence can play like this, they can win a Super Bowl.
“They can score against any defence in the league, and if the defence can make the other team punt a couple of times and give it back to Mahomes, that’s a lot of points they can score.”
The Chiefs will take on either the New England Patriots vs Los Angeles Chargers next Sunday.
The Patriots and the Chargers face off on Sunday night.
