Johnson was on course to win the tournament with ease in Shanghai - leading by six after the third round and eight shots ahead of Rose.
But a disastrous +5 fourth round from the American saw him plummet down the Sheshan International leaderboard.
Johnson bogeyed on his first two holes of Sunday’s round and held his nerve until the par-three 12th, where he again bogeyed.
Two more, on the 15th and 16th, saw him surrender his lead as Rose charged up the leaderboard, followed by Henrik Stenson and Brooks Koepka, who tied second.
Rose earned eight birdies in all, finishing his round with a 67 after bogeying the sixth, eighth and ninth himself.
