Ryder Cup 2016: Lee Westwood's Friday foursomes nightmare
LEE WESTWOOD formed an all-wildcard partnership with Thomas Pieters in the bottom match for Team Europe on Friday morning.
Captain Darren Clarke must have been hoping 'Westie', playing in his 10th Ryder Cup, could settle the nerves of the rookie who is 19 years his junior.
But in fact, it was Westwood whose struggles saw the pair go down 5 & 4 to Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar.
Hole 1: Westwood saves his younger partner the nerves of tee shot on the first but flashes one down the right hand side into the sand.
HOLE LOST
Hole 2: Pieters leaves his parter a few feet for a half but the 43-year-old failed to sink the most regulation of short putts.
HOLE LOST
Hole 7: Westwood wheels out his cut swing again and gets his ball wet up the right.
He has the chance to atone with a chip into the green but leaves it at least 30 feet short of the hole.
Ryder Cup's Greatest Moments
Johnson and Kuchar meanwhile are having none of the same problems and move four up after seven.
HOLE LOST
Hole 13: After Johnson sinks a 30-foot putt for par, Westwood has a two-foot putt for birdie to reduce the gap to four holes.
However, the old short stick fails him again and he pulls it left of the hole to leave his pair dormie five down.
HOLE LOST
Hole 14: Westwood sets up a 20-foot putt for Pieters to make birdie and the Belgian rookie duly obliges.
However, Kuchar achieves the same feat and the hole is halved.
The American pair sealed victory and their team's second point of the day.
