Golf news: Scottie Scheffler wins the Open as Bryson DeChambeau aims fiery rant

Well, as Rory McIlroy said, Scottie Scheffler really is inevitable. 

It's a second major championship of the year for the American. 

And in fairness, it's hard to argue against it. 

He was exceptional across the week's play and has finally got his hands on the Claret Jug.

Bryson DeChambeau has revealed Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley left a touching message for all of the players in contention to make the USA team. 

He explained: “You know, I talked with him briefly. And then he put something in our lockers that was pretty inspirational...it's personal. It's a personal message... It meant a lot.”

Before explaining the mentality Team USA will adopt at Bethpage Black: “This year's no joke. We're tired of it. We're tired of losing."

Who said he didn't care, huh?

Scottie Scheffler only needs the US Open to achieve the career Grand Slam.

The 2026 US Open final round is on June 21 next year.

He misses a 15ft putt for birdie on the 18th but taps in from close range to secure The Open.

It wasn't to be for the local hero this weekend but he's certainly put on a show at Royal Portrush. 

Sharp contrast to the last time The Open was held on home soil for McIlroy, who is now looking for an up and down to finish on -10. 

It's a five-shot lead with two to play for the world No.1, who looks set for his second major title of the year. 

He'll be just one away from the Career Slam... aged 29.

It wasn't to be for Shane Lowry this week, but the Irishman still had plenty of fun. 

Scottie Scheffler bounces back immediately with a classy birdie. 

It's a lead of five strokes for the American now. 

He's -16 through nine. 

Scottie Scheffler drops his first shot of the round on the seventh.  

He mishit a bunker shot and didn't get out of the sand. 

Scheffler made up for it with his approach, landing around 10ft short. 

But his first putt trickled just by the cup, meaning it's +2 on the scorecard for the world No.1.

Bryson DeChambeau is in the clubhouse with a score of nine-under-par. 

A reminder he ended Thursday's opening round with +7 next to his name. 

He doesn't need reminding, but if he'd have hit par on Thursday, he'd have been one behind Scheffler as it stands. 

What a comeback though!

It's taken four holes for any hopes of a Scottie Scheffler wobble to be evaporated. 

He's just birdied the fourth, meaning he's -16, with a seven-stroke lead. 

There's more chance of Scheffler finishing 20-under-par than throwing away the title... right?

And speaking of Scheffler, he is about to follow McIlroy onto the course.

The action has started...

Shane Lowry expects Scottie Scheffler to finish the job and lift his first Open title this evening.

"I'd say it (leading by four heading into final day) was probably a bigger challenge for me than Scottie today," Lowry told Sky Sports after finishing his final round in 66.

"It's unbelievable how good he is. He doesn't do anything wrong, even when he does, he gets himself out of trouble. He's putting great this week. All the expectation is on him.

"I said to Rory last night, hopefully he can get off to a good start and have the crowd on his side, and you never know what can happen, but it's hard not to see Scottie winning from here.

"If Scottie shoots three or four under, he won't be caught."

Shane Lowry received a rapturous reception as he came up the 18th fairway towards the amphitheatre surrounding the green.

And he almost gave those fans something special with one last birdie after chipping up and onto the green with his third shot.

His ball rolled towards the hole but agonisingly hit the pin and deflected slightly away!

The Irishman could only put on a wide grin as he finished in 66, his best round of the week. He finishes on -2 overall.

Bryson DeChambeau is among the players currently out on the course, with the leaders about an hour away from teeing off.

The American has just found his first birdie of the day on the par-three third hole after dropping his iron five feet from the pin.

LIV Golf star Sergio Garcia must play the final 16 holes today without his driver after snapping it in a fit of rage on the second.

The Spaniard was not happy with his tee shot, hooking it far to the left as he did on the first hole.

But he finished the first with a par, and then went and birdie'd the second! It could be a long day without that driver, though...

Shane Lowry is currently completing his final round of The Open and gave the Northern Irish fans something to cheer about on the fourth hole.

Lowry passes the par-five fourth in four shots, having hit his second shot into the green side bunker and then using his third to get back onto the fairway.

With his fourth, the ball pitched slightly before the sloped green on the right-hand side before rolling down the hill and into the hole.

He's had a tough tournament, but that was a moment to remember!

It's a warm morning on the Antrim Coast, with minimal wind. We could see some strong rounds today...

Bryson DeChambeau aimed fire at The Open officials after being timed during his third round on Saturday.

Playing speed has been an issue at The Open this year, prompting officials to step in on Saturday.

The American revealed that he had been timed on the 17th hole after his tee shot, and has urged golf's governing body to take new steps to keep up the pace of play.

“It's very simple. It's not difficult at all. You eventually time everybody for their whole entire round. Very simple," DeChambeau said.

"Nobody wants to do it because people are too scared to get exposed.”

Rory McIlroy was caught up in one of the weirdest moments in Open history during his third round when he unearthed a buried ball while taking a shot.

The Grand Slam champion found himself in the rough following a wayward tee shot on the 11th hole as he chased Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick.

McIlroy made his way back onto the fairway with ease but looked baffled when a second ball pinged out of the rough.

Sky Sports commentator Nick Faldo reacted: "Oh my goodness, there was a ball underneath his, the things you see.

"That's got to be a right, hasn't it? It doesn't count as two shots? What are the odds on that? A member's ball, that is unbelievable. Boink."
