Max Homa looked for the positives as he took to social media after missing the US Open cut and his tournament ended early. He carded a second-round 75 to finish on six-over-par and remains without a major success in his career.

Only 22 out of 156 golfers broke par on a difficult Friday, as world No. 10 Homa began the day at one-over-par and tied for 34th place. He then proceeded to card five bogeys over the first 12 hooves of the second round, ending five-over and one stroke shy of advancing to the weekend.

He has now made the cut just once in six attempts at the US Open and will be disappointed not to have broken his major duck. Homa was one of several big-name omissions, alongside his playing partner Viktor Hovland and Tiger Woods, but Homa remained thankful for his family as he explained: “My wife is still a rocket.”

Having taken to Instagram with a series of photos of Homa with his wife Lacey Groom and their son Cam, the American wrote: “Sucks missing the cut. Pinehurst may be my favourite course I’ve ever played. On the bright side my wife is still a rocket, my son is cool as hell, and I get another chance next week.”

Homa and his wife met online over a decade ago and celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in November. She can often be seen with their son at Homa’s tournaments cheering him on, having previously explained the importance of Cam being in attendance.

Groom explained: "It's important to me to bring along our baby because even though he's too young to remember it, I just love for him to experience new places and cultures and different types of people. And I just think that's a really important thing.

"So even though it is a little bit more challenging to bring him and sometimes a little bit more stressful, it's so rewarding and it's awesome. We get to see the progression of our life evolve, and it's so special."

It was not the US Open that the Homa family were hoping for and the 33-year-old star is now hoping that chaos ensues at Pinehurst, which he can watch from afar as his fellow pros deal with the repercussions.

Homa swapped over to X (formerly known as Twitter) as he posted a GIF of actor Will Ferrell laughing, captioned with: “The moment I wake up on a Saturday after missing the cut I root for the course to become impossible so I can laugh at all the stupid players who whooped my a**. I shot 6 over and will shamelessly be this gif all weekend.”
