Bryson DeChambeau is in contention to win the US Open for the second time in his career but has transformed since his triumph in 2020. Nicknamed ‘The Scientist’ because of his analytical approach to golf, the 30-year-old is seen as a controversial figure within the sport because of his confident personality.

When he landed his major title in 2020, DeChambeau had bulked up his physique in an attempt to increase the distance of his drives. It brought short-term success as DeChambeau won the US Open and Arnold Palmer Invitational, but has switched up his diet from his big-swinging days and now cuts a completely different figure.

He was one of the star names who controversially left the PGA Tour for a big-money deal with LIV Golf in 2022. Express Sport takes a closer look at DeChambeau’s lifestyle.

Forbes lists DeChambeau as the sixth highest-paid golfer in the world, with earnings of £34.7m ($44m). However, Celebrity Net Worth puts his overall net worth slightly lower at at around £11million. Having come second in the PGA Championship in May, DeChambeau will look to enhance his career winnings with a second US Open victory.

It was reported that DeChambeau had been paid £98.6m ($125m) to join LIV Golf in June 2022. When the Country Club Adjacent podcast joked DeChambeau had a “$125m smile”, the Californian replied: “That’s a little low.

“I’m not gonna say the details, I mean for what’s reported it’s somewhat close. It’s a four-and-a-half-year deal, I can definitely tell you that and a lot of it was upfront, which is great.”

As for his dating life, DeChambeau is reported to be in a relationship with golf influencer Lilia Schneider. However, neither DeChambeau nor Schneider have publicly confirmed that they are a couple. The Marian University student has more than 200k followers across Instagram and TikTok.

However, DeChambeau has also proven to be adept as a content creator, with 691k subscribers on YouTube. The US Open winner feels that creating videos has helped increase his appreciation for the sport.

“YouTube has helped me understand that a little bit more,” he said. “When the moment comes, knowing what to do, what to say, how to act is really important. You know, when I was younger I didn't understand what it was.

“Yeah, I would have great celebrations and whatnot, but I didn't know what it meant and what I was doing it necessarily for. Now I'm doing it a lot more for the fans and for the people around and trying to be a bit of an entertainer that plays good golf every once in a while.”

DeChambeau's appearance has also been a hot topic of conversation for some time. In late 2019, he began looking to gain weight, with reports claiming he put on up to 50lbs, as he searched to gain an advantage over his rivals. It meant that ‘The Scientist’ had the longest average drive on the PGA Tour during the 2019/20 season but his heavy regime eventually started weighing him down.

Revamping his diet, DeChambeau has explained the reasons for the drastic change:"I ate improperly for almost a year and a half and I was starting to feel weird,” he told the Five Clubs podcast in November 2022.

"My gut was all messed up, and so I went completely healthy, went on a Whole30 diet, got a nutritionist, did blood work, measured stuff in my gut biome. I was super inflamed. And then just recently since I’ve been using this new chef, I lost 20 pounds in a month."

Speaking to the Toronto Sun a few months later, DeChambeau added further context to his change of diet: "I was allergic to corn, wheat, gluten, dairy. Pretty much everything I liked, I couldn’t eat. I took that out. Started taking it out in August (2022) and over the course of time I’ve lost all this inflammation, lost a lot of fat and slimmed down like crazy."

The change in diet did not bring immediate success on the golf course as DeChambeau was forced to alter aspects of his game. However, having recently finished runner-up at the PGA Championship and now among the leading pack at the US Open, he is arguably back to his best.

DeChambeau has been an outspoken character during his career, which has earned him a reputation as a divisive figure. His approach to gaining the most from his drive and perspective on the sport successfully rubbed some onlookers up the wrong way, even before opting to join the LIV Golf Tour.

‘The Scientist’ missed out on representing the USA at the 2020 Summer Olympics after testing positive for Covid-19. He subsequently revealed that he was not vaccinated, stating: "The vaccine doesn't necessarily prevent it from happening. I'm young enough, I'd rather give it [the vaccine] to people who need it. I don't need it. I'm a healthy, young individual that will continue to work on my health.”

DeChambeau has played several rounds of golf with Donald Trump, going on to represent Trump Golf, and celebrating his 2020 US Open win at Trump's golf club in Westchester. He understands that he’s not everybody’s favourite golfer but insists he never intended to be a controversial personality.

“I'm a very passionate individual, and some people can take that in a pretty negative way,” DeChambeau explained. “Others can take it in a way of: ‘Wow, he's trying to pave a pathway and his own path’.

“I think that's a pretty big misconception; that I'm divisive. I'm really not. I don't try to be. It may come off that way because I'm passionate about certain things and certain subjects.”
