Tommy Fleetwood was hit with a harsh three-word response from his now-wife Clare when he first asked her out - due to their 23-year age gap. Tommy and his partner Clare first met in 2015 when she initially approached him to be his agent - but told the golfer 'Don't be stupid' when he asked her on a date.

Clare, 56, stated that she turned Tommy, 33, down the first few times and cited that there was a huge age gap between them as the reason.

The Sun reports that Clare said: "We've got a 23-year age difference. Of course, I turned him down. I was like, 'Don't be stupid'."

However, Tommy didn't give up and the pair began dating after Clare "eventually gave in" - and she continued to represent him as part of the professional athlete's management.

The pair tied the knot in 2017, with Tommy becoming the stepfather to Clare's children, 17-year-old Oscar and 16-year-old Mo - and the couple also have a six-year-old son together, called Frankie.

The world number 13 has claimed that the age difference in his family has often raised eyebrows but that the couple and his three kids are a really tight-knit group.

Speaking on Barstool Sports' podcast, Fore Play, Tommy said: "The whole family - we're unbelievably close. There's Oscar and Mo and they are the two older ones and then there's Frankie.

"And, you know, honestly, it's funny because whenever anybody asks, so people that don't know you they'll always say, 'Do you have kids?' And, pretty much all the time I'll say 'yeah, I have three kids' and they'll go, 'How old are they?' And I'll say '17, 16 and six'. And then you get the look.

"So then, I'm like, well I'm not that old, so then I'll have to explain that the first two are step-kids which, honestly, I don't really, I never really think of them as step-kids. I've been around them a long time now.

"Particularly Mo, I think I've been a, I guess, a parental figure to Mo since he was five. I'm unbelievably lucky with the relationship that we have. We're so close. When the five of us are together that's always our safe space and I hope we always keep that."

Tommy also previously told The Times that the couples' shared sense of "Northern humour" keeps them close and "wanting to be the best you can be".

The golfer said: "We share a very northern sense of humour. We’re both from working-class backgrounds — when you look at our parents they brought us up in a similar fashion, whether it be in terms of kindness or toughness or wanting to be the best you can be."
