Bryson DeChambeau gets the last laugh after receiving most brutal snub possible

Bryson DeChambeau failed to get a call-up into last Autumn's U.S. Ryder Cup team, but this could well be a decision that Zach Johnson regrets.

Bryson DeChambeau has more than made up for being left out of last September’s United States Ryder Cup team, after re-finding his best golf in 2024. Having joined LIV Golf in 2022, DeChambeau struggled to find the form that saw him become one of the best players on the planet in recent years.

The 2024 campaign however has seen the American kick back into life, especially on the major stage. After recording a career-best tied-sixth finish at the Masters, DeChambeau almost clinched the second major of his career at last month’s PGA Championship.

A final round seven-under-par 64 at Valhalla in May saw him storm into contention across his final 18 holes. Sadly for DeChambeau however he was pipped to the title by a single shot, after Xander Schauffele rolled in a birdie putt at the 72nd hole of the week, to deny a playoff with his fellow countryman.

DeChambeau did not rest on his near-miss though, and once again finds himself at the right end of the leaderboard at this week’s U,S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. The Crushers captain headed into Sunday’s final round with a three-shot lead over Matthieu Pavon, Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy.

He made the most of moving day in North Carolina on Saturday, shooting an impressive four-under 66 in testing conditions to open his gap at the top. Despite having previously been a divisive character during his pro career, DeChambeau’s surge back to form has seen him become a fan favourite, especially around Pinehurst this week.

Remarkably less than nine months ago, DeChambeau was not even in the conversation for a U.S. Ryder Cup spot, as the Americans fell to defeat on European soil under the guidance of Zach Johnson. There is no doubt the visitors would have benefited from the prowess of DeChambeau following a week to forget in Rome.

According to the man himself though, he revealed captain Johnson did not even offer him a phone call to tell him he had not made the team. “I am playing better than Winged Foot. If you look at it, it would have been nice to at least just have a call,” he said last September.

“There are numerous people that I think Zach should have called out here, and we didn't get that. I understand, I get it, but we're [LIV golfers] nothing different… It definitely does sting a little bit, but say what you want, we're still golfers, and I personally think that given the way I played this week, I could have definitely racked up some points for Team USA.”
