Rory McIlroy has divulged the reasoning why he and his wife, Erica Stoll have decided to scrap their plans for a divorce. Ahead of this week’s U.S. Open, the Northern Irishman divulged that remaining together was best for his family’s future.

According to The Guardian’s Ewan Murray, McIlroy and Stoll have opted to each voluntarily dismiss the divorce petition that they filed last month at Palm Beach County State Court in Florida ahead of the PGA Championship. The couple, who’ve been married for seven years, appear to have overcome whatever issues were affecting their relationship in the past and are looking forward to putting this difficult time behind them.

Just last month, Stoll was served legal papers from her husband and given Florida's standard 20-day window to provide her response. But according to the Daily Mail, she missed the deadline and would’ve been in danger of receiving a default divorce granted by the court had the petition not been dismissed.

Addressing the recent hearsay surrounding his marriage turmoil, McIlroy told the Guardian, “There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool’s game.”

The 35-year-old also provided more details as to why he and his wife had a change of heart, adding: “Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

McIlroy’s comments mark the first he’s publicly made about his personal life since news of his possible divorce was leaked. His manager, Sean O’Flaherty, issued a statement on the player’s behalf, writing: “Rory McIlroy's communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed. They stressed Rory's desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment.”

With his troubles off the golf course seemingly resolved, McIlroy happily turned his focus towards securing a fifth major. The world No. 3 last accomplished the feat at the 2014 PGA Championship over a decade ago.

“I’m really proud of my body of work over the past 15 years and everything that I have achieved, whether it be season-long titles or individual tournaments or majors,” he told reporters. “Obviously getting my hands on a fifth major has taken quite a while, but I’m more confident than ever that I’m right there, that I’m as close as I’ve ever been.”

As for how many more titles he hopes to win in his already-decorated career, McIlroy stopped short of setting an exact goal. "I wouldn't say I have a particular number of wins [as a target]," he continued.

"I think the only thing about trying to pick a number is that you're setting yourself up for failure or disappointment. Tiger [Woods] wanted to surpass Jack [Nicklaus]. It looks like he might not get there, but are we going to call Tiger's career a failure? Absolutely not. It's arguably the best. He's played the best golf anyone's ever seen."
