Scottie Scheffler's supremacy on the golf course has been underscored by his astonishing lead over Rory McIlroy in the world rankings. The world's top golfer secured his latest triumph at the Memorial Tournament over the weekend, narrowly defeating Colin Morikawa (-7) with a score of eight under par.

This marks his fifth victory in just eight PGA Tour events this season. And his most recent win has further bolstered his remarkable lead in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Scheffler, 27, now boasts a total of 754.78093 points, leaving second-placed Xander Schauffele trailing with 375.32636 points and McIlroy, 35, in third despite having more points (381.53462). However, the rankings are calculated based on average points, and McIlroy has participated in four additional events, reported The Mirror.

The points gap between Scheffler and McIlroy stands at a staggering 373.24630 points. To put this into perspective, the difference is only slightly greater than the gap between McIlroy and world No 559 Harry Hillier, who has just 8.17870 points.

Masters champion Scheffler also set a new single-season PGA Tour earnings record with his victory at Jack Nicklaus' Memorial event. His $4million (£3.1m) top prize has brought his total earnings for the year to an impressive $24m (£18.9m).

This surpasses his previous records from both 2022 ($14m) and 2023 ($21m). Remarkably, Scheffler has finished lower than T10 only once all season, amidst becoming a father for the first time and being controversially arrested at the PGA Championship last month.

At the tender age of 27, he has already climbed to seventh on the PGA Tour's all-time money list, with his career earnings totalling a staggering $66,589,782 (£52.4m). And there are no signs of him slowing down.

He had to fight hard on the final day at Muirfield Village, scoring a 74 in his final round which was just enough to hold off Morikawa, who had gone one under for the day. He thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.

"I feel like I've had some close calls in this tournament," he commented after his triumph in Dublin, Ohio. "The golf course was playing so tough today. It was so firm, so fast - 16, 17 and 18 were brutal."

"But I mean it was a fun test to golf. I like it when it gets this hard and yeah it was good to battle it out. I didn't really do a whole lot great today, but I did enough to get the job done."
