Ryder Cup 2018: Who will be Jim Furyk's USA wildcard picks? Tiger Woods inclusion expected
TIGER WOODS is expected to be named as one of Jim Furyk’s four wildcard picks for the 2018 Ryder Cup.
The USA captain will name three of his four wildcard selections on September 4 at 22.00 BST.
The eight automatic spots in the 12-man team have already been taken up by Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson.
With the announcement looming, it is widely expected that Woods will make his first Ryder Cup appearance since 2012.
That was at the Miracle in Medinah, when the Europe team fought back from 10-6 to record an iconic victory in USA’s backyard.
Ryder Cup's Greatest Moments
It is quite a turnaround from the start of the year, when the 42-year-old found himself ranked outside the top 1,000 golfers
Woods played the last singles match on the Sunday, and halved his point against Francesco Molinari to confirm Europe’s triumph.
The 14-time major champion has convinced Jim Furyk that he’s ready for a return, however, after an impressive string of performance in 2018, including his second-place finish at the PGA Championship in August.
It is quite a turnaround from the start of the year, when the 42-year-old found himself ranked outside the top 1,000 golfers in the world, when three back surgeries appeared to have broken the sport’s smoothest driver.
Furyk’s acceptance that Woods wouldn’t rediscover his form was highlighted in February, when he named the Californian vice-captain, under the assumption that Woods wouldn’t even be in contention for selection.
Ryder Cup Europe tease the start of the tournament
At the Dell Technologies Championship this week, Woods’ performance was slightly eclipsed by fellow veteran Phil Mickleson, however.
Mickleson is also expected to earn a wildcard spot, and his 63 final round - his lowest round of the season - highlighted the left-hander’s evergreen ability.
Following the round, Mickleson said: “It’s fun to play like that.
“Hopefully, that will make it a lot easier for Jim. I’d love to be on that team.”
Rookie Bryson DeChambeau is expected to be the third pick announced by Furyk tomorrow.
The final wildcard pick will be announced after the BMW Championships on September 10 at 14.00 BST.
