Liverpool news: Roma legend Francesco Totti reveals pressure to sell Alisson
ROMA legend Francesco Totti admits his side couldn’t block Alisson’s move to Liverpool.
Alisson becomes the most expensive goalkeeper at £65m
Alisson completed a £66.8million switch to Liverpool on Friday, making him the world’s most expensive goalkeeper in the process.
In making his fourth signing of the summer, Jurgen Klopp showed his side are serious about mounting a title challenge with their acquisition of a highly-rated shot-stopper.
Alisson, whose reputation grew last term in Serie A, was also linked with moves to Chelsea and Real Madrid.
The big-money transfer did little to quash suggestions that Roma are a selling club, who let Mohamed Salah join the Reds last summer.
€75m for a goalkeeper happened for the first time and we couldn’t say ‘no’
But Totti, who now works as a director for Roma, insists the club had little choice in the matter when it came to sell Alisson.
However, he insists the player’s departure won’t debilitate the squad.
“We’re building a young team for the future,” Totti said.
“We’ll try to strengthen as soon as possible, so that Roma can compete at the top.
“Alisson? The market figures have changed, €75m for a goalkeeper happened for the first time and we couldn’t say ‘no’.
“I’m sorry that we’ve lost one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but we’ll try to build a strong team regardless.”
Alisson, who kept 17 clean sheets for Roma last term in 37 Serie A games is currently recuperating ahead of the new season after being on World Cup duty with Brazil.
