France led after 18 minutes into the final thanks to an own goal from Mario Mandzukic.
However, Croatia equalised 10 minutes later courtesy of Ivan Perisic but Les Bleus took the lead again just before the break after a questionable handball by Perisic in the box.
Manchester United man scored France’s third after half-time but the goal of the afternoon came from Mbappe.
The Paris Saint-Germain man picked up the ball from 25 yards out before unleashing a sensational low strike into the bottom corner for France’s fourth goal.
Mbappe is the first teenager to score in a World Cup final since Pepe in 1958.
“We talked about the youngster coming to the final and he has left his mark now,” former England defener Martin Keown said while commentating on Match of the Day.
“Mbappe has no right to shoot from there but that is exactly what he does.
“The goalkeeper has no chance and he cannot even see it. The water carrier is carrying champagne now.”
But no sooner had Mbappe put France into a commanding lead in the final, Mandzukic cut Croatia’s defecit to two after exploting a shocking mistake from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
The Tottenham man received a backpass from Samuel Umtiti and tried to bring the ball under control.
However, a tackle from Mandzukic resulted in the Croat firing into an empty net to make it 4-2.
