Liverpool transfer news: Klopp told to complete new signing because of Van Dijk
VIRGIL VAN DIJK made a big improvement to the Liverpool defence last season - but he was not as good as some people claimed.
Van Dijk hasn't made a massive difference says Stewart Robson
Those are the thoughts of former Arsenal midfielder turned pundit Stewart Robson.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in January for a club-record fee of £75million.
The Dutchman helped the Reds to the Champions League final and also qualify for the competition next season.
But Robson does not believe the addition of the centre-back is enough for the Reds to win major honours.
Van Dijk certainly made a difference. I wouldn’t say he read the game as well as people said he did
He says Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp must spend what it takes to sign a top-class goalkeeper this summer.
“They were better defensively towards the end of the season,” Robson told ESPN FC.
“Van Dijk certainly made a difference. I wouldn’t say he read the game as well as people said he did.
“But Liverpool were better all round defensively, in midfield.
Virgil van Dijk: The other teams should be jealous of us
“It wasn’t just about the back four, it was about how they defended elsewhere on the field.
“But they still need that goalkeeper and I don’t think it matters how much they spend on the goalkeeper, they need a new goalkeeper.
“(Loris) Karius won’t come back from that disaster against Real Madrid.”
