The Championship club sent scouts to run the rule over the 25-year-old against Spezia today.
Mbakogu opened the scoring as Carpi, currently mid-table in Serie B, secured a 2-1 win.
Leeds are unlikely to sign a striker before the transfer window slams shut on Wednesday so Mbakogu could be targeted in the summer.
And, according to Italian publication TuttoMercatoWeb, Carpi are ready to sell in June.
Mbakogu has been at Carpi since joining from his first club Padova in 2014.

He has struck 36 goals in 124 appearances for the northern Italian side.
Leeds have scoured European markets for new players since Andrea Radrizzani completed his takeover last May.
A new target man was on Leeds’ wish list heading into the January window but Football Insider claim there is no money left in the club’s transfer budget.
Signing a striker is expected to be a top priority ahead of next season.
