Nottingham Forest have been searching for a new boss since Mark Warburton was axed on New Year’s Eve.
Monk left his post at Middlesbrough and is keen to take up the job at the City Ground.
But Sky Sports claim Forest have moved for another ex-Boro coach in Karanka instead.
According to the report, Forest have offered the Spaniard the chance to take over from interim Gary Brazil on a full-time basis.
The news is likely to rankle with Monk, while Paul Heckingbottom, and Nigel Clough have also been linked with the most.

Forest beat Arsenal 4-2 in the FA Cup yesterday to book their place in the fourth round.
The draw takes place tonight at 7.10pm.
Warburton lost his job after the 1-0 loss to Sunderland on December 30.
Since then the club have drawn at Leeds and also claimed the shock of the FA Cup third round with that win over Arsenal.
Karanka has been out of work since leaving Middlesbrough at the end of the last season, with the club having failed to escape relegation from the Premier League.
The season earlier he had steered them to a second-place finish in the Championship and a return to the top flight for the first time since 2009.
