Arsene Wenger: Why Arsenal vs Liverpool clashes aren’t so meaningful now
ARSENE WENGER has conceded Arsenal clashes against Liverpool aren’t what they used to be.
Arsene Wenger doesn't think Arsenal clashes against Liverpool are as important now
Arsenal find themselves in fifth spot in the Premier League, a point behind Liverpool, who visit the Emirates Stadium tonight (7.45pm).
In the past 20 years, both clubs enjoyed some titanic tussles, however at the time they were vying for the title.
But now they are fighting to finish in the top four.
While Wenger is aware of the history between the two sides, he doesn’t think tonight’s showdown carries quite the same significance.
“I am aware of the history, yes,” Wenger said.
Arsene Wenger takes cheeky dig at Manchester City
Thierry Henry! It was a pivotal game in the unbeaten season
“But this game is not about winning the League, it’s about being our next Premier League game to come back in a strong position in the top four. That’s what it’s about.
“Yes, I watched that game (in 1989), I saw the goal — Michael Thomas.
“It’s fantastic history for the club and since '89 we have won championships, won FA Cups, we’ve played many times against Liverpool and many games can be remembered.”
Jurgen Klopp's men could do the double over the Arsenal
When asked what his favourite Arsenal memory is against Liverpool, Wenger added: “I don’t know what is my best memory, maybe when we won the championship in 2004 — we were 2-1 down at half-time and won 4-2.
“Thierry Henry! It was a pivotal game in the unbeaten season.”
Arsenal will be looking to get revenge after a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Jurgen Klopp’s men back in August at Anfield.
