The Spaniard ended his four-year spell with Los Blancos in the summer, signing for Chelsea in a deal that could rise to £70m.
Morata fell out of favour under Zinedine Zidane last season with the Frenchman opting to start Karim Benzema instead.
Widespread reports suggested the 25-year-old was pushing for a move to the Premier League but it turns out he was forced to leave because of a lack of playing time, particularly in the Champions League.
"Of course I would return to Real Madrid, but it's complicated," Morata told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser's main football programme El Larguero.
"I told the coach I wanted to play more. That I wanted to go is foolishness. I felt important for Madrid, but I wanted to play in the Champions League knockout stages.

Of course I would return to Real Madrid, but it's complicated
"I've never said a bad word of Madrid nor will I say it. Always I wish them the best. I'm a fan of Madrid but a Chelsea player."
Despite talk of a return to the Spanish capital, Morata insists he is enjoying a “calmer life” in London with his wife.
"We have adapted well in London. When I arrived I got used to not having time to think much,” he said.
“At the beginning, it was not all the good that was expected. My wife has helped me a lot.

"Before, when I lost, I was locked in my thoughts. Now I take it differently. I have a calmer life.
“There is more traffic jams than in Madrid. I miss the weather but the sun rises, even if it's half an hour."
Morata is currently on international duty preparing for Spain’s friendlies against Costa Rica and Russia.
