Liverpool had the best of the chances while United keeper David De Gea produced a number of fine save.
Joel Matip had the pick of the chances in the first half but his close-range effort was kept out by the leg of the Spaniard.
Gomez had only made three league starts for the Reds before this lunchtime clash.

It's a bit frustrating for us considering the chances we had in the game but we’ve got to try and take the positives.
But he was trusted with a starting spot by Jurgen Klopp and he helped them to their first clean sheet in nine games.
