Coutinho was making his second start of the season for the Reds following a summer of speculation over his future.
Barcelona made three bids for the Brazilian playmaker but Liverpool refused to sell.
Coutinho handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through an exit but he was unsuccessful and made to stay.

Doubts remained over his commitment to the cause after the failed moved, but Heskey says tonight’s performance for Liverpool in the Carabao Cup put those thoughts to bed.
“Definitely, definitely,” he said on Sky Sports at half time.
“No one can get near him, no one dares to really put a challenge in on him.
“He dances around two or three players there, they tried to get close to him but the way he manoeuvres his body is great.

“Definitely (he’s difficult to live with in this form).
“That’s why the big teams are all looking at players like this.
“He’s a wonderful player.”
Philippe Coutinho was substituted at half time by Jurgen Klopp in place of teenager Ben Woodburn.
