Southampton defender Van Dijk was linked with a move to Liverpool throughout the off season.
The Dutchman handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s but Saints were determined not to sell.
He was again subject of conversation again today when Carragher was discussing Liverpool’s defensive options ahead of the 5-0 defeat to Manchester City.
Ragnar Klavan came in for first-choice defender Dejan Lovren, with manager Jurgen Klopp saying the Croatian was not 100 per cent fit.

Carragher says there is a lack of strength in depth in that area and suggested a new signing was needed.
But he did not want to upset Southampton fans by mentioning Van Dijk.
“We know there was a centre-back they were after,” Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“I’m not going to mention that because I’ll get too much stick off Southampton fans.

“But that is the one weak area in the team where you think there isn’t enough strength in depth.
“You want your centre-backs there every single match.
“Him and (Joel) Matip miss far too many games.”
Van Dijk is yet to play for Southampton this season, who lost 2-0 at home to Watford today.
