Liverpool fans Van Dijk pursuit could stall as Southampton agree new Chinese investment
SOUTHAMPTON have sold an 80 per cent stake in the south coast club to a Chinese investor – and Liverpool fans fear it could stall their pursuit of Virgil van Dijk.
Dutchman Van Dijk handed in a transfer request last week as he looks to secure a move away from Southampton.
Liverpool are favourites to secure his signature despite Southampton threatening to report the club the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach.
Southampton are adamant their star man will not leave the club but Liverpool were remaining hopeful a deal could be reached before the transfer window shuts.
However, Saints have now confirmed Chinese businessman Gao Jisheng has bought 80 per cent of the club in a deal thought to be worth £210m and some Liverpool fans fear they are even less likely to sell their star man as a result of new investors.
