MANCHESTER UNITED should try and get Gareth Bale in return if David De Gea joins Real Madrid, according to former United assistant Rene Meulensteen.

De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to the Spanish capital ahead of this summer's transfer window.
The goalkeeper almost signed for Real in 2015 but the deal fell through at the last hurdle and he signed a new contract at Old Trafford.
But United are set for another bid from the La Liga giants and Meulensteen reckons they shouldn't leave negotiations without a star coming in the other direction.

Manchester United and Jose Mourinho must try to make sure that if that is the case, what is the best outcome for Manchester United?
"As a manager you have to find out where he wants to go, is he going?" he said on talkSPORT.
"What is the best scenario for us? What do we want to get out of it?
"Especially for De Gea, the speculation has been there now for three years.
