Manchester United announced the news that their former striker Andy Cole had successfully had treatment.
Cole, 45, is now an ambassador for the Red Devils.
A statement read: "Manchester United Ambassador Andrew Cole has undergone a kidney transplant operation at Manchester Royal Infirmary as part of his treatment for a condition called Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis.
"During his recuperation, Andrew will be taking a break from his role as Manchester United Ambassador.
"Andrew and his family would like to thank the club and fans for their support.
“They also request that he can continue with his treatment in private, and ask that their privacy is respected."

In November 2015 Cole said he was on the road to recovery after a kidney failure.
“I just try to enjoy life as much as possible," he said. “By getting ill, I've been very unfortunate, but I'm getting on with it the best I can. I'll try to get over it as quickly as possible.”
Cole is 17th on United’s all-time top-scorers list, having netted 121 times in 275 games for the club.
He was part of the 1999 treble winning team and earned 15 England caps.
