Paul Ince: Arsenal need to sign a player like this Chelsea star
ARSENE WENGER lacks a leader in his Arsenal squad, according to Paul Ince.
Paul Ince says Arsene Wenger needs a leader at Arsenal
Ince was named captain at almost all of his clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United as well as at international level for England.
And the former midfielder has questioned Arsenal's lack of leadership, claiming the Gunners need a Gary Cahill in their squad.
Cahill has been handed the captain's armband for 17 of Chelsea's games this season in the absence of John Terry, helping the Blues to nine points clear at the top of the Premier League.
Paul Ince believes Gary Cahill is the ideal leader
Wenger named Mertesacker as his new skipper in the summer following the departure of Mikel Arteta, but the German is yet to feature after picking up a knee injury in pre-season.
Ince told Paddy Power: "When you think of their starting XI, you look at the team and there’s not one player who you would worry about or find intimidating.
"There’s no hard men and no clear leader. You might say Shkodran Mustafi to a certain extent, but you’d rather have Gary Cahill in your team.
"The midfield is lightweight and the entire team is so dependent on Alexis Sanchez, who has been world class this season.
Per Mertesacker was injured in pre-season
"You can even sense that he is getting frustrated now, he wants to win. It’s not just on the field, I suspect the changing room isn’t happy at the moment too.
"It’s great when you’re winning 3-0 and everything is going well.
"But the real test is when you’re 3-0 down and you haven’t got those leaders to push you on and be vocal and take control of the team, and we saw that against Chelsea.
"Their players fold under pressure."
