Steven Gerrard arrives for his first day at Liverpool in new coaching role
STEVEN GERRARD returned to work at Liverpool today - in his new role as academy coach.
Steven Gerrard returned to Melwood to start work as the Liverpool academy coach
Gerrard, 36, is back at Melwood having retired as a player after leaving Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of the MLS season.
His new role with the academy he will work closely with director Alex Inglethorpe in helping the young talent come through at Liverpool.
The former Liverpool and England captain is doing his Uefa A coaching licence at the same time.
“It feels like completing the circle,” he said when his new role was announced last month.
“I’m returning to the place where professionally it all began. However, this isn’t a decision based on emotion - it’s about what I can offer and contribute to Liverpool.
“I don’t think I need to explain to people what this football club means to me, but when I knew coming back was a serious option I wanted to make sure it was a substantive role and a role in which I could really help the organisation.
“Meeting with Alex Inglethorpe, seeing the work they are currently doing and want to do in the future at Kirkby, it just felt right. The right option at the right time, for all parties involved."

Today was Steven Gerrard's first day back after retiring as a player at the end of last year
Gerrard turned down an approach to manage MK Dons before accepting the new role at Liverpool.
He also considered offers to keep playing but decided to hang up his boots after a disappointing spell in America.
Gerrard, who won 114 England caps, played for Liverpool for 17 seasons before leaving in 2015.

He is expected to continue in his role with BT Sport as a pundit and was in the studio last night for Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
His reaction to the Liverpool equaliser was caught on camera and showed his impartiality.
