Charlton’s record lasted for 44 years before Rooney surpassed him.
Ferguson brought Rooney to Old Trafford in a £27m deal in 2004, making the then 18-year-old the most expensive teenager in Premier League football at the time.

Rashford, meanwhile, who began his United career with a flourish, has struggled for regular game time under Jose Mourinho this term.
And Ferguson thinks Rooney’s record could stand the test of time.
“In the present-day game, it is difficult to see any club having players who can stay with them for 10 years,” Ferguson told BBC Sport.

"Jose has mentioned Marcus Rashford and there is an opportunity for that young lad, if he stays at United, and develops his potential the way that Wayne has. But it is a very big target to hit.
"Bobby Charlton's record was quite substantial. I couldn't think anybody would beat that.
“It is an achievement par excellence."
