Mauricio Pochettino makes Tottenham transfer announcement
TOTTENHAM will not be in the market for a new defender following the injury to Jan Vertonghen, Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed.
Mauricio Pochettino has ruled out a replacement for Jan Vertonghen
Jan Vertonghen left White Hart Lane on crutches yesterday with suspected ankle ligament damage following the 4-0 win over West Brom.
The injury looks set to keep the Belgium international on the sidelines for an extended period, prompting questions about a possible January replacement signing.
However, Mauricio Pochettino has ruled out bringing in a defender this month, claiming he has enough strength in depth in the squad.
Jan Vertonghen could be sidelined long term
Pochettino: Mourinho will always be 'the Special One'
"The injury is disappointing for us. It looks a very bad one. We need to wait for tomorrow or Monday to assess it better but it looks really bad," Pochettino said.
"But no, this does not change our plans in the market.
"We have Ben Davies who can play there, [Kevin] Wimmer is a centre back, who played recently against Aston Villa and Watford and Cameron [Carter-Vickers].
"We have plenty of players so we don't have to move."
Vertonghen looks set to be sidelined for some time, meaning he will miss Spurs' clash with Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday (5.30pm).
Tottenham currently sit in second place in the Premier League - seven points of league leaders Chelsea.
