Van Dijk has been instrumental for Saints this season, and his performances have seen him pique Manchester United's interest.
Although Redmond missed several presentable opportunities to extend Southampton's lead, Van Dijk was pleased with his team's defensive display.

"We won and kept a clean sheet which was important. We played good football at times against a great team but we were unlucky today," Van Dijk said.
"It's all about communication at the back, we talked to each other well.
"It will be tough, we knew that, but it's a good win. We need to believe - a final is something special for the club."

The two sides face off again at Anfield in the second leg on January 25 (8pm).
Southampton turn their attentions back to the Premier League on Saturday (3pm) when they take on Burnley.
