Marcus Rashford came off the bench in the 58th minute with the game still goalless at London Stadium.
And his assist for Juan Mata’s opener four minutes later inspired United to a 2-0 win in east London.
Asked what Mourinho had said before sending him on, England international Rashford told Sky Sports: "He just told me to stay wide and get at the full-back.
It is tight between second and sixth and we need to keep winning every match
“I did that and followed those orders.
“As soon as I looked up (Mata) was the option and I was just pleased he finished it. It was a big three points.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored United’s second to move Mourinho’s men to within one point of fourth-place Arsenal.
