Alan Pardew failed with a bid to sign Thomas, 28, on transfer deadline day when his club Angers turned down their offer because they didn’t have time to sign a replacement.
Pardew has continued to keep tabs on Thomas since the window closed and will be making a move for him when it opens again at the start of next month.

He is looking to strengthen one of the worst defences in the Premier League and believes that Thomas can help Crystal Palace climb the table in the second half of the campaign.
Watford have also been alerted that he is available and will provide some competition to Pardew getting his man who is rated at affordable £5million by the French side.
