JURGEN KLOPP has revealed he felt compelled to drop goalkeeper Loris Karius for Liverpool's win over Middlesbrough, although he admitted it wasn't a decision he took lightly.

Karius came under fire for his recent performances against Bournemouth and West Ham respectively.

And speaking about his decision to drop Karius, Klopp said: "Life is not always the nicest but these are my boys and for me it is important to push them and protect them and sometimes I have to make decisions I don't like.
"I know how strong Loris is, but he couldn't show it in the last few games.
"Judging him in this moment makes no sense. Simon Mignolet is on the bench and we have to have competition.

Liverpool are now back up to second in the table, six points behind league leaders Chelsea.
