Jamie Redknapp slams Jose Mourinho decision: This is why Man Utd lost points at Everton
JAMIE REDKNAPP has slammed Jose Mourinho's decision to bring on Marouane Fellaini at the end of Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Everton.
Jamie Redknapp says Jose Mourinho was naive to bring on Marouane Fellaini
The midfielder came on for Henrikh Mkhitaryan with five minutes to go as Jose Mourinho looked to see out a 1-0 win at Goodison Park.
But Fellaini conceded a penalty moments later for a tackle on Idrissa Gueye, with Everton's Leighton Baines converting from the spot to take a point from Manchester United.
Jamie Redknapp says Henrikh Mkhitaryan could have added to Manchester United's lead
Jose Mourinho brought on Marouane Fellaini to defend Manchester United's 1-0 lead
And Redknapp believes Jose Mourinho was naive to take off Mkhitaryan as the in-from forward could have been key to doubling United's lead.
He told the Daily Mail: "I cannot remember the last time a manager made a defensive-minded substitution to close out a 1-0 win and still managed to hang on.
"That kind of change used to work for Jose Mourinho at Chelsea but now it just invites the opponent to attack.
Marouane Fellaini conceded a penalty moments after coming on
"It is becoming harder to cling on in the Premier League — teams keep on pushing and pressing for an equaliser.
"Marouane Fellaini, who came on for Henrikh Mkhitaryan with five minutes to go, will be blamed for giving away the penalty that saw Everton snatch a late draw against Manchester United.
"But if Mkhitaryan had not been taken off, he could have picked the key pass to seal the win."
