What makes me smile is that that’s something that Mourinho used to throw at Arsene Wenger
And Carragher believes this shows Mourinho is turning into his arch-rival Wenger.
The two men have clashed several times over the years, with Mourinho labelling the Arsenal boss as a specialist in failure in February 2014.
“[Yes] there’s a contrast and a change from last season. David De Gea was saving ten shots a game last season and now he’s only saving one,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“[But] what I would say though is – yes the football is better and Manchester United fans are enjoying going to see the games more under Mourinho than Louis van Gaal – but what makes me smile is that that’s something that Mourinho used to throw at Arsene Wenger.
“[He used to say] 'Ok you play the good football, the press love you but I’ll always win the trophies.'
Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger have had a number of run-ins over the years
“Yes the football is better and there’s not a lot at times that the manager can do about the finishing – you’ve just got to hope the quality of the players can finish but it’s not enough.
“You think of the teams they’ve played – West Ham, Burnley Stoke – two of them are facing relegation this season so you’d expect their keepers to be worked.
“I think for the cost of the squad – the costliest in world football – to be 13 points off the top of the table is not enough.”
