Manchester United are reluctant to let Rooney leave before the end of the season, even though Jose Mourinho doesn't always start with him.
But Everton could be more successful with Depay, who has struggled since moving to Old Trafford from Eindhoven last year and has played just 20 minutes in the Premier League this season.

And a loan deal - at least - for the young Dutchman now looks likely in January, with Koeman also getting first refusal on Rooney's services next summer, despite Chinese interest in the England skipper.
The Everton boss, who admitted he wanted to sign Depay when he was manager at Southampton, said: "That has not changed. We have to be patient, but we will do business in January."
