Express Sport revealed last week that Roma are one of three suitors interested in landing Dutch winger Depay.
Everton and are keen on the former PSV star, who cost Manchester United £25million last summer.
But Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport claim Roma have been negotiating a rival deal with United for weeks.
According to the claims, Roma have tried to keep the talks secret in order to prevent other clubs in Italy making an offer for Depay.
Inter Milan, it is claimed, could outmuscle the Rome club and manager Stefano Pioli is said to have identified Depay as a viable January target.
Depay appears to have no future at United, with manager Jose Mourinho reducing the 22-year-old's playing time to just seven games this season.

But Mourinho would prefer not to offload the winger onto another English club, denting Everton's hopes of landing even a short-term loan deal.
Roma are keen to land a winger and have also supposedly identified Sunderland's Jeremain Lens as a potential recruit - although he is currently on loan at Fenerbahce.
Bosses at the Serie A club hope Depay's management team Sports Entertainment, who also run Kevin Strootman's affairs, will help secure the deal with United.
