Barton last played for Rangers in the Old Firm but has been suspended from the club since a bust-up with Andy Halliday and Mark Waburton.
BBC Scotland report that a stalemate between parties means Barton is not going to report back to the club on Monday and is now unlikely to play for the club again.
Barton is currently under an SFA investigation into betting activity and has pushed his hearing back.
Warburton refuses to open up on Barton’s Rangers future
The midfielder joined Rangers this summer as the marquee signing after an impressive season for Burnley in the Championship.
But he's struggled for fitness and hasn't found his rhythm in Scotland.
The initial training ground bust-up saw him sent away from training for a week before he was officially suspended for three weeks.
That was then extended by another week which would have meant a Monday return, however BBC Scotland report that he won't be in Glasgow.

Barton hasn't played for Rangers since the Old Firm
The controversal midfielder hasn't helped his case with public outburts and the promotion of his new book.
Rangers have got their season going with two SPFL wins in a row in his absence.
Warburton's side are now up to third but have played a game more than most of the team around them.
