Huddersfield boss Wagner has overseen the Terriers' rise to the top of the Championship this season.
Their attractive style is said to have impressed Villa bosses, who are seeking a new manager after Di Matteo was today sacked.
Steve Bruce has also been linked with the vacant post and Betway have the former Huddersfield, Birmingham and Hull manager down as favourite at evens to be appointed.
