United were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City - Jose Mourinho's first Premier League clash with rival Pep Guardiola - before going down 1-0 to Feyenoord in the Europa League.
A trip to Watford, who had not even managed a draw with the Red Devils in 30 years, should have represented an opportunity for some redemption.
However, goals from Etienne Capoue, Juan Zuniga and Troy Deeney saw the Hornets run out 3-1 winners at Vicarage Road.
The Cobblers knocked out West Brom in the previous round on penalties but were beaten 3-1 by Chesterfield on Saturday in League One.
But the Red Devils should know better than to underestimate their opponents after two consecutive defeats to less fancied sides.
However, Fellaini revealed that Mourinho was actually urging his side to play like the favourites against Watford.
"At half-time, the manager told us to come out and play with confidence and we did that by grabbing the goal," Fellaini added.
"We played with tempo and we need to start doing that from the first minute.
"In the second half, we were much better.
"We kept the ball, created chances and played forward.
"We got back into the game at 1-1 but then we gave away the second goal by giving them too much space and not pressing the ball."
